Malt Shovel Anlaby Road, Hull 01482 501450 Friday Night
Public House on Anlaby Road about 5 minutes from centre of Hull. Easy to miss venue, because it looks more like a shop front than a pub. Landlord is Graham ( and Christine). Awkward lift because you can't get too close to front doors, and have to park on double yellows, and wheel you gear through into pub and onto small stage. Easy going and friendly audience.
Manor Club Manor Road, off Willerby Road, Hull 01482 561206 Saturday Night & Sunday Night
Members Club on Manor Road which is a long residential street off Willerby Road, about 10 minutes from the centre of Hull. A reasonable sized stage, with good lighting. There is a small dressing room which adjoins the stage. Loading access is through the main doors of the club, and then to walk the full length of the club (50 / 60 foot) A DJ follows the act, so the venue is still quite full when the artist is ready to leave, making it a difficult exit through chairs and customers. A friendly club and audience, booked by Newland Agency in Hull.
Market Weighton Social Club 42 Southgate, Market Weighton 01430 873476 Saturday Night & Sunday Night
Members Club in Market Weighton, a small town on the York to Beverley road. Cabaret Artistes booked by Newlands Agency in Hull on a Saturday Night, and Country & Western Artistes on a Sunday. reasonable sized stage, with a small dressing room off stage. Reasonably easy lift through side Fire doors and about 20 feet to stage. Tends to be a mature audience, not always very busy particularly on a Saturday.
Mon Fort Hotel Tennyson Avenue / The Promenade, Bridlington Every Night in the Summer Season
Sometimes referred to as The Tennyson Bar, the Mon Fort is an Hotel a few minutes walk from the centre of Bridlington staging Live Entertainment most nights of the week through the Summer months. A little difficult a lift, you need to park outside and carry your gear through a couple of quite narrow doors, and round to the window which is where you set up. Quite a select venue, run by the ever so pleasant Michael Almond. Regular Nights include Stephanie Jane Goodfellow every Tuesday from June to September, Adam Goodfellow every Wednesday June to September, The Dixielanders Jazz Band every Sunday night with Quiz Nights on Mondays and Thursdays and visiting Guest Artistes every Friday and Saturday. Books artists direct. Update (December 2005) Michael sold the Mon Fort last year and is now run by a couple originally from Castleford (she is called Lesley) Adam & Steff are no longer there (they are now based in Majorca) but the Jazz Night still continues on a Sunday Night.
New Rink Social Club Eastgate North, Driffield, East Riding (01377) 253345 Saturday Night Double Bill
Privately owned Members Club in Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire. Membership is required, although it is free of charge, but there is a £2 cover charge for Saturday Night entertainment. This will include any guests that the artiste might bring with them, other than perhaps their immediate partner. On a Saturday Night there are normally 2 artistes, and it is a late finish. First artiste on about 9.30 for 40 mins, then 2nd artist about 10.15 for 40mins. First artist back on for about 11.15 for 40mins (normally a few minutes gap to allow 1st artist to strip gear down) and then 2nd artist back on about midnight for final 40 minutes. The stage is a good size, but it is a long lift through the club, although there are no steps, and a trolley is very useful. Dressing room just off stage is quite small, and there is a sound meter situated near the bar. Owners are Jim & Shirley Hood, and compere is Don Smithson. Normally quiet for first spot, but then gets busy as local pubs close, and locals come in for late drinks. Dance floor fills quite quickly. Nice gig. Books through Newlands Agency in Hull, SAS in York, and books direct those artists that he has seen himself.
Pocklington United Services Club Grosvenor House, Pocklington, York YO42 2AG Saturday Night
Members Club near centre of Pocklington which is a small town on the main Beverley to York road (A1079). Fairly recently revamped Concert Room (2003) but reasonably good lift through fire doors, up a ramp and round to stage. Concert Room maybe holds 100 people maximum. Club uses SAS Agency, although they do book direct. Concert Secretary is Peter Taylor (although he resigned November 2003)
Raine Club Durham Street, off Holderness Road, Hull Saturday Night & Sunday Night
Members Club on Durham Street which is a long residential cul-de-sac off Holderness Road, about 10 minutes from the centre of Hull. A reasonable sized stage, with good lighting, particularly the lighting rig at the back of the stage. A very small dressing room adjoins the stage. Access to the stage is via a fire door which is only a matter of feet away from the stage. Access to this fire door is down a small alleyway at the side of the Club, which is wide enough to reverse a car or small van, but this would have to be moved as it blocks pedestrian access to the Club. There is parking on the street, but it is limited. The proprietor is Colin Harrison and he books through various agents as well as booking artistes direct. Change of management in June / July 2003 - club now run by Graham - formerly of the Engineers Arms.
